It could be done, as in anything can be done, but the early 205 did not need power steering for normal drivers.
You would need the rack, pump, pipework brackets, possibly even the entire front suspension / trans-axle as (without checking) the entire geometry may have been revised to suit power steering.
You would need to do some serious measuring to check the compatibility.

A car of that age will normally be at or close to the end of it life due to rust and general wear, do you really want to invest the effort?

I have owned 10 different 205′s in my life, 5 currently. You only have to avoid interchanging parts from the pre-1987 to the post-1987 cars.
The steering column is a different length between these years. AND the steering column-to-rack attachment bracket is slightly different.

So…. in answer to your question, a LATER 205 (1987 to 1998) should fit on an earlier one (but not earlier than 1987).
Personally, I think many parts from a 306 or 405 might also fit! I own both these cars too.

Also… I am not sure what a ”gti” might have to make it different. Diesel should give you NO special problems.
EXPENSE: don’t buy anything new for this discontinued 205 model. The price will be high. In Belgium, 205 parts are still cheap and plentiful. If you need an internet source for parts from Belgium (Oostkamp near Brugge) just ask me.
